A blank dashboard could be down to a blown fuse, bad wiring or a bad connection, or a problem with the circuit board.

Mine was one of those that remained working, but would not keep the time and trip distance figures, but rather than pay to get it repaired, I FIXED IT MYSELF!

....Here's my experience;

I've soldered the coper coil, but nothing. The solder didn't look cracked to start with but thought I would give it a go. My soldering isn't the best but it is in one piece and I didn't burn through the board.

When I installed it same thing happened again, nothing, bar the clock whick was on there before. It flickered a tiny bit as it tended to do before, but no amount of wiggling it would make it flicker, so thinking it's something else, checked all contacts etc but nothing. Ideas?

Try speaking to In Car Systems 02871 301023 to check if it's your panel at fault, there are companies repairing these but the RAC man seemed to think highly on this company for this problem. apparently these display units regularly behave strangely before they stop working completely. Mines had been behaving strangely since June then on Monday morning i needed to call out the RAC when my Scenic refused to start, this turned out to be due to a flat battery. The RAC man seems to have came across this before and say's it due to the fault with the instrument panel.

OK, try this:
Remove the digital display surround. It's easy to pry off with a blunt knife or similar. It's in two parts, top and bottom. Start at the top. This reveals the digital display unit. Unscrew the black screws at either end of the unit, and then tilt it from the bottom to remove it from its housing.
Once out in the open you can access the two cable clusters that plug into it. There is a grey plug and a red plug. They both have a lever action clip which extracts the plug from the display unit. The plugs have a number of holes which match pins on the display. Squirt a small amount of lighter fuel (a solvent that won't melt plastic) into the holes on the plugs, and before the liquid evaporates, replace the plugs into the display unit. Put the display back into the dash.
Don't replace the surrounds until you have tried starting the car. Everything could well be back to normal.
It worked for me.

Yes HELPER - if hitting the dashboard makes it come on again then it proves there is a lose connection.
BMAKs solution is very well written. I have followed the text and everything was the same on my model except that I had to remove the 6 Torx screws to open up my display.
Also, as the connectors to the display are locked-in blocks, you don't need to disconnect the battery. Unlocking the blocks breaks the circuit safely. I undid the Grey then the Red; and reassembled in reverse - though I am not sure that it matters. I too was quoted a replacement fee of £650 but "as Renault recognised there was a fault, the garage would do the job for £150 (and Renault would cover the rest)".
The removal, dis-assembly, soldering, re-assembly and reinstallation took me just 30mins.....and I was not rushing!

This may sound crazy but start the car and just hit the dashboard on top and you're clocks come back on just seen it on utube and it works

My Dashboard died on me yesterday and various friends - good with repairing cars were at a loss. My local Renault Dealer has given me a slot on Friday (will take 'till then to get the part) to have it repaired and they will cover 75% of the cost - REALLY!!! - with my contribution being £150 (has gone up 50% since the £100 previously quoted) takes about an hour, if it repairs it and stays repaired well nothing one can do really but if it goes again do they repair it again 'free'? Fingers crossed it is okay after reading all the letters on this website and another 2 websites I doubt it!!!!!!!!!

removed dashboard and indeed as stated by BMAK there was a definate dry joint next to the grey plug socket. have re-soldered it twice and seems ok second time round..this dry joint will cause a problem one way or another and im hoping that it is the only problem.when re-asembled after the 1st attempt the dash would dim but after just touching the grey plug it brightened.?

Firstly MANY THANKS to BMAK. I have just carried out the repairs as you have suggested.
One point however you DO need to remove the screws to undo the clips at the back of the circiut board.
The joint was dry and I rebuilt the dash and put it back in the car. But dismay the trusted dash is indeed dead. It beeps and squeeks like a dying duck.

What Now. Bash my head on the desk or what?

Found a company this time that repair these & give five year guarantee Spoke to a chap called Iain on 02871 301023 all good at last

UPDATE: This fix lasted two days. My instrument cluster is now back to it's former ugliness.

June 2011
Hey All, I just wanted to add to Brian Turner's brilliant post from August 2010.

I, like many of you, have been suffering from the dying instrument console on my 51.5k Renault Megane Grand Scenic 2005. It started slowly and then built up to where it was off more often than it was on. On three occasions when the dash has come back on I noticed it had added 10k to my mileage!

So my Renault, which had 51.5 on the clock in Feb 2011 (when it was MOT'ed) now has 81.5k on the clock. I am a little grumpy about this.

Anyway, I read through this and many other forums, watched the Watchdog video and contacted Renault. Same story as the rest of you, they would change it for 100UKP.

But I was really peeved about this. It wasn't my fault they had produced a low standard component and yet they still wanted to make a little money out of me.

That's when I noticed Brian Turner's write-up. It all made perfect sense as the problem appeared to be aggravated by temperature (whether the dash was hot or cold) and, sure enough, if I started the car and the instrument cluster stayed off, a quick thump on top of the dash usually brought the lights back on.

So I started to investigate taking the instrument cluster out. At first I feared this would involve taking out the whole dash, but Renault told me the replacement should only take two hours to fit and it would take alot longer than that to remove and refit the dash. Somewhere else I read of someone taking the instrument casing off (from around the instrument cluster) by gently prizing off the top and bottom casings. I VERY gently probed around the top half of the casing and sure enough it came off without must bother. I repeated the process for the bottom section. The Instrument cluster was exposed in all its glory and, better still, the remaining screws needed to remove it were easily accessible (it's just two large black Torx screws, one either side of the instrument cluster).

So I ran the car for a week with the casing components left off. When the cluster failed to come on I would gently press the left-hand side of the RED connection block and "hey presto" the cluster would come back to life.

This corroborated what Brian Turner had been saying. Somewhere on the Instrument Console was a dodgy connection. To confirm the exact detail of Brian's post I would need to remove the instrument cluster and dismantle it.

So right here I should point out that I in no way took this lightly. I didn't want to screw up the car any more than it already was and I knew that Renault would not want to help once I had taken the instrument console to bits. But I was just so annoyed at having to pay for crappy workmanship that I decided to push on and see if my instrument panel also had the 'dry solder joint' as reported by Brian.

I started by disconnecting the battery. Then I unscrewed the two Torx screws holding the instrument panel in place. Next I tried to remove the two connector blocks, one RED, the other GREY. These were really fiddly as I had not encountered this type of block before. Both blocks are held in place by locking catches, the Grey one goes over the top of the block and it's action helps to raise and lower the connector into the socket. Even with the latch in the OFF position it was still a struggle to get the thing to release.

The RED block also had a latch but this one was on the top of the block and was more of a locking slider rather than a latch. This too was fiddly to get off, but in the end they both disconnected. I spent some time examining the action of both locking mechanisms so I would have some idea of the reverse process once they were ready to go back on.

With the connectors released and removed it was time to remove the instrument cluster. This assembly has a free floating hinge in the top corners. This helps you to swing up the console and slide it out of the hole while on it's "back".

I went back to my desk and examined the instrument cluster. There are six Torx screws holding the front colour lens in place, but it is not necessary to remove this to get at the circuit board. The plastic casing containing the circuit board is held together by four plastic clips, two at the top, two at the bottom. These can be GENTLY released to separate the two halves of the circuit board casing, exposing the circuit board.

The circuit board just lifts out and is not held in place by any screws or catches.

Turning over the circuit board I used a magnifying glass to inspect the solders, and in particular the two connections holding the copper coil component. Most of the soldered joints on this circuit board are flush but every now and again there was a random wire sticking out above the height of the other connections. One of the connections coming from the copper coil was such a connection, the other was flush soldered.

I inspected the wire connection to this coil and sure enough could see a clear 'crack' around the circumference of the wire and between the wire and it's solder joint.

At this point I should say that I photographed all this in Macro, but I can't find a way to post photos on this forum, which is a shame because a 'picture tells a thousand words' as they say.

Nothing else on the circuit board displayed this condition so I was fairly certain that I was seeing what Brian had written about.

Time to solder.

It goes without saying that you do not undertake the following unless you are confident at soldering. If you screw this up you will have to pay the whole 500 UKP (or whatever Renault are demanding) or you will need to go online and look for a replacement from a spare parts vendor (I did this and got quoted about 80UKP for a second hand replacement).

My original soldering kit was a bit past it, so I went to the local Maplin and bought a new kit (20 UKP for a soldering iron, stand, solder, solder removal pump and sponge). I then found some old boards attached to technology I was throwing out (in this case a hard drive) and tried a couple of de-soldering, re-soldering tasks. Once I was confident that my hand wasn't shaking too much I moved to the circuit board.

I de-soldered the joint (with the solder removal pump) and then re-soldered the joint. Total time to complete, about 5 minutes. I checked my work with the magnifying glass, took some more photos (sorry folks, I would be happy to post them) and then reversed the process for dismantling the instrument cluster.

Back out in the car I reassembled the cluster in place before tackling those nasty block connectors. It took me a couple of attempts to get them back into place and at that point I stopped with reconstructing the dash.

I want to test this solution for a couple of weeks before considering the job done, so I left off the instrument panel casing and just re-connected the battery.

When I climbed into the drivers seat I was greeted with 'Please insert your key card" (or whatever the exact message is). The main thing is that the console was live, so I hadn't made things worse. The car starts and runs normally and the console reports everything it should.

At this point I will let it sit for a couple of weeks to check the work. I also need to try and see what can be done about the extra 30k this fault put on my mileage (not happy about that).

I take no responsibility for any damage you may do to your vehicle should you choose to try and replicate my process.

But this proves Brian Turner's findings and also proves that lack of quality management is at least one cause of this fault. Total cost of this repair (assuming it turns out to be fixed) was 20UKP (for the soldering kit) and the time taken to remove and reassemble the instrument console.

I will try to remember to report back here in a couple of weeks to let you know how this fix is going.

My display has failed completely after seemingly losing power a few times (mpg, mph, trip mileage, clock etc all resetting on their own). On contacting Renault UK, (after reading this site), one of their automated selections is for Scenic owners with dashboard display faults. The automated advice is to contact your local dealer whereby for a contribution of £100, the unit will be replaced with a 12 month warranty.

My 55 plate dCi has just done 70000 and started playing up - took it out to see if the coil had dry joints on back of pcb but the coil is surface mounted and no other obvious dry joints - I guess this is a later design of module?? This happened to me. I phoned the local dealer and was told they could replace it for £100. ( I had already watched the Watchdog programme!!) They then phoned to say they had no parts and were waiting for them. A week later - nothing- a week later.... The dealer service dept suggested i phone UK Customer Services.

They said the dealer should have offered a hire car straight way - so you can get a hire car until your care is fixed.

i happened to ask Customer Services had there been any legal action as this has happened to thousands of renault owners.

Within 2 hours the dealer phoned to say they had a part and could fit it 8am the next day!

So there are parts in the UK but they only offer them immediately under pressure and at the very least you can get a hire car.

Try the UK Customer services (complaints)to start with and be assertive

hey all, save yourself £100+ and fix it yourself. quite easy. 10 mins to remove the display module. and 10 mins to resolder a dry joint an the circuitboard. On the circuitboard near where the larger of the two sockets is, you will see a copper coil (about the size of a 1p) , at the back of that on the other side of the circuitboard you should notice that one of the pins from the copper coil isnt making contact with the circuitboard. All I did was reseal teh solderjoint with my soldering iron and the dashboard is working prefectly again. What drew my attention to what the problem was, i found by chance. I hit the dashboard to check for a loose connection, the dash went on and off a few times. this made me think it was a bad connection , and i was correct. I saved myself £100 just by using my own soldering iron. hope info helps.

Sept 2009 my dash went completely blank so checked on net to see if anyone else had this problem. Result I phoned c/s at Renault who could not have been more hepfull. they arranged for the local main dealer to contact me and book an appointment for a replacement dash to be fitted . This was done within 3 days of my first conversation with Renault plus my car ,which on a 54 plate had 95000 on the clock, was ashed and valeted at a total cost of £49. Although I have nothing but praise for Renault for the way they handled this problem and love the car I will never buy any of their models again with this type of dashboard

Not happy with Renault, £100 towards the cost of getting a car back with no mileage on the clock and only a twelve month warranty on the replacement dash.
Apparently its the same service for everyone. My next door neighbour had theirs fixed with a three year guarantee by Car systems 02871301023. I had been about to do the same until the Watchdog program. Renault should have told me that i would have no mileage on my car when i got it back. For a few pounds more i wouldn't have this problem.

Hi I have also had this problem with my 05 Grand Scenic. After phoning Reault CS and speaking to Nathan about this fault, He asked a few questions and said what would you like Renault to do. Told him that I have been on the web and found numerous sites relating to this dashboard fault and that they have said that Renault do recognise the fault and would pay for a new dashboard in full. Nathan said he would ring me back later which he did and offered to pay most of the cost but that I would have to pay £100 towards the cost , as the car had done 73,000 miles. I have only owned the car for 9 weeks so thought this was quite a reasonable request. So He rang Adrian at East Goscote Renault who offered me a hire car for the next day and to pick the car up later that day. As this is the first Renault I have owned I cannot thank Renault CS and Adrian at East Goscote Renault enough. "Didn't think I stood a chance with the car having done 73,000 miles. Although it dose have a full Renault service history" Thanks again and thank god for the internet. How would we find out about these things without it.

Hi, thanks for the above messages i have had the same problem with my 55 plate grand scenic, it started with the clock needing to be reset, then it flickered and went completely, i took it to my local Renault dealer, the price for repair was £518.00. the car is 4 years old and i've only had the car 11 months with only 48,000 on the clock. i contacted Renault uk customer services told them what i thought, i was very nice to them and said i felt they should pay the parts cost and i would pay the labour, they contacted the dearler rang me back 20mins later and said that because they wanted to show good will they had told the dealer that i would collect the car this afternoon and Renualt uk paid the bill in full. Now thats service. the new dash has lost the milage so renault will send me paperwork to prove the milage at the time of new dash being fitted. Dont take the dearlers word call renault uk they know they have problems with this display, the new models have a LCD display this is more reliable and thats from the horses mouth. Yes - same issue here, clock reset each time you started up car over a 7-day period. Started car up this evening and blank. And this is after the Air-con went. i had this problem last week, a quick call to renault uk. customer care who was very very helpful and after less than 20 mins on the phone they had not only transfered me to my local renault dealer service department, but had said if the problem was down to the known fault they would pay all of the bill. i am more than happy with the service given, absolutly no hassle at all with them....they asked me a lot of questions ie, have i owned renault before, when i trade my scenic in what car am i thinking of getting, with what i can gather, if you tell them that you have had before and you really like renault then the more of the bill they pay..

This problem is widespread and very common with this model of renault and yet the customers have to foot the bill, and needless to say it is not cheap.
I got exactly the same problem, the dashboard lights went off, went to a renault dealer have it fixed, the problem now, is that the mileage is down to zero, when I noticed that, I phoned them up, and asked why is the mileage zero when it was 46k, to my dismay they said there is no way they can know how much the mileage was, therefore legally they had to reset it to 0, I want to sell the car but buyers are suspicious and think the mileage has been reduced on purpose. I am really annoyed.

I had the same on my Scenic Grande, an O5 plate and 46k on the clock. The garage phoned and quoted me £515 to replace.

Due to finding this forum I phoned renault uk, explained the problem and told them that I was unhappy. I wasn't angry or confrontational and without any negotiation they offered to pay the amount in full!!

Needless to say I was a happy man.

I suspect the reason they offered to pay the full amount was because my car was with a renault service centre rather than a standard local garage - although I'm not sure why that would make a difference.

Anyway, thanks for the advise on here and if you find yourself with the same problem DO phone Renault UK.

My 2005 Grand Scenic dashboard has just started resetting the clock, trip etc. and I went to a Renault dealer in France (coz that's where I was at the time). He told me it needed replacing. I have e-mailed the Watchdog programme at BBC to see if they know about this. I suggest you ALL do the same and then maybe something will be done. I certainly don't have the money to replace OR repair mine. I have told Watchdog to view this website.

I got the same problem occur for the 1st time this morning. Dash just went totally blank. Called in to Renault Dealer where I bought the car, 53' Scenic, thinking this could just be a fuse. Was told new dash unit was required, somewhere in the region of £700! Had a cuppa in local Greggs cafe, trying to come to terms with what had just happened. After 5 mins of looking on the web on my phone I manged to get a lot of info on repairing the problem myself! Stripped down the dash very easily. I found that if I put upward pressure on the left (grey) connector the display came back to life!!!! So managed to wedge a peice of plastic between the bottom of the connector and the top of the plastic see through LCD cover. Ever since then the display has worked fine. However I have lost the next service details and display states I need a service & oil change. I know I have 11,000 miles left, is there any way to get this information back? I can happily live with this if not, as there is a hell of a difference between £700 and a simple 5 min fix in a town centre car park. Hope this helps :O)

Quick Question, does the refurbished/repaired dash keep your Mileage? and also just how long is the warranty?
My dash just went, car is 30 days out of warranty, I hate Renault with a passion, wish I'd had enough to buy the Corrola Verso!

Guess what yet another Scenic blinking at me first the clock and speedo trip ,now total loss, have found giving the dash a slap helped but only short lived, I have today emailed Renault expressing my total disgust at them using parts that manage to fail just after the three years warranty period, How is that for timing they have promised reply by next day ,will have to wait and see, will post back if positive result

Hi,
Same thing happened to me recently on my 05 Scenic. this seems to be a common fault. The solutions were to have it fixed by people who offer this service or have it replaced by Renault. Cost of a Renault replacement was around £450 whereas a repair was around £175+vat. Complaining to Renault customer service I got a replacement dash board fitted by my local main dealer for £135. I've lost my milage but a note in my service book explains this. My advice is take your car to your local Renault main dealer and get a quote for repair/replacement and then get on the phone to Renault UK customer services. No need to get arsey with them just tell them how dissapointed you are and they may help you out like they did me. Good luck!

I have a 55 grand scenic with 25k on the clock. The guy we bought this off has offered to get this repaired he says it's a 2 minute job (went blank the day after purchase.. not happy!). Those that have had it done (especially not involving Renault) have you lost your mileage?

Just been off phone to Renault head office. Dash went blank at 44,000 miles. They said they would not be able to help but would give me £750 off a new car if I wanted one. Will never have another one about me.

Just had the same happen on a 55 reg grand scenic. Flickered and reset for a week before finally packing right up. Everything else worked apart from the remote radio controls.
Rang Renault head office direct who asked me to take to the local Renault dealer to diagnose before committing on contributing. I had bought the car privately 6 weeks ago and it has no warranty with 42k on the clock, when I last saw it!
Dealer tried to take £100 after the inspection which I refused to pay. Renault said that they would not cover any of the £500 odd quid to replace the dash.
After asking to speak to the customer service reps manager at Renault head office (nicely, don't lose it!!) she offered to pay first 50% (thanks but no thanks) and then 70% of all costs...net result £153 to get a new one fitted within 48 hours.
Not ideal, this part should never fail, especially on a three year old car but better than I was looking at yesterday.
Thanks to all for posting info on this topic but it is worth talking to Renault direct from this personal experience. Most dealers will try and rip you off.

I own a 2004 scenic with the classic fault starting with the clock resetting to 0.00 when you start the car. Try bba-reman.com for a 2 yr guarranteed refurbed unit for about £150 + vat/carriage, very helpful staff

£150 + £8.25 for UK next day postage, Renault Megane or Scenic digital dash clocks repaired for a fraction of the £620 Renault quoted me! With a longer warranty also!
If you've also been messed about by renault over your faulty dashboard, then give these guys a call 07599 159222 (direct line to tech) I think his name was Ian.
Told him how i'd been treated by Renault & got his permission to give out his personal number, .
He said they can usual have dashboards for Megane or Scenic's, back with the customer within 48Hrs after receiving them. I posted mine on a Monday & had it back repaired on the Wednesday!
I was well impressed as with the personal service, & if i have any problems, i have a direct contact to people who seem to know what their talking about. As opposed to the unhelpful people at Renault customer services.

In fact they were very helpful, i even got to speak to the engineer who actually repaired my instrument cluster.. He gave me instructions on how to remove my Instrument panel from the dash, took me around 10 minutes & about 15 to refit it. Renault said they would be charging me 2hrs labour for this.

So for anyone at Renault reading this. Thanks for nothing! I'll be letting everyone know!

This is more like a manufacturers fault.

Did Renault offer any other solutions. Are there fuses for this? Did you have any other warning signs?

Ours has gone as well. Before it went we had problems with the clock going to 0:00 as though power to the dash had been cut off.

Did you get an opinion from an auto electrician?
