dead emachine 420?My pc has been turned off for the last 3 weeks and not used. Last night in the middle of the night it all of a sudden turned itself on with a rattly sound and instead of a green light around the on button it was yellow. The screen never went on and when I tried to turn the tower off it would'nt turn off so I unplugged the computer. This afternoon I tried to turn the computer on to check it out and it was completely dead, nothing from the tower at all. I replaced the fuse in the plug to see if that made any difference but nothing. Any ideas and please use plain English as I am not into computer jargon. Luckily I have a laptop that I am using but my photos, etc are all on the desktop computer.

Hi Jenny,
There is a known issue with Emachines 420. To get this computer working again, you will have to purchase a motherboard and a power supply. If you was to pop into a local computer shop and ask for these products, they will be more than happy to sell you these products. However, you will require some knwoledge to install these two products inside your machine. The other option would be to get these fitted by someone else if you know anyone (or a computer shop may do it but charge you).
Considering the price required for these two products (approx £30-£40 for both and decent quality), it may be a better option for you to buy external housing for your hard drive in your Emachine 420 where the photos are located. Again, you will need some knowledge of computers and this may not make any sense to you but I am letting you know all the options I can think of. The external hard drive housing is usally priced around £25 average.
The final option would be just to get a computer shop to backup your photos onto a CD or DVD. They will charge you for this. PCWorld will be able to do this at £20 I believe, so might be worthwhile doing that. For this you will have to take the whole unit into the shop/store and they will do it for you, but shop around for the best price first.
I would be more than happy to help if you lived around the corner for free but I very doubt you do. If you want, you can email me for more help: kashef84@hotmail.com
I do hope this information is of use to you.
