Peugeot 406 Automatic Gearbox problem?I have a Peugeot 406 Diesel Auto estate 02 reg. The gearbox keeps going into safe mode. This started very occasionally but now is regular - worse in the first few miles of any journey. I can reset it by turning the ignition on and off.
Ive had various suggestions ranging from gearbox oil change through microswitch failure to a full computer and or gearbox replacement costing a fortune.
Some unbiased advice would be very welcome.
Many thanks

Hi I have a Citroen c5 2009, same engine as the 406, as this engine came out of a Peugeot. Likewise it has also gone into limp mode, snow and sport lights on engine management light on, ecu and abs lights on and a warning of check gearbox, only mine wont reset by switching it off. The Citroen site forum says there is a communication problem between the ecu and gearbox reading the wrong information.

I have a 2001 406 that had this problem about 2 years ago. I had the solenoids changed, and it fixed it, but it's just failed again, about 40000 miles later.

Well I wish I had an answer. Dec 2011 they told me I might need a new gearbox and it would be £2000/£3000but they could try replacing the seal and topping up the oil but if fault reoccurred i.e Automatic gear fault message apeared again then maybe I need new gear box. They did the seal and the oil and all was ok till march 2012 when message reappeared and on one occasion it seemed to jump into gear. In it goes again tomorrow to a peugeot place and apparently if they do something with the solenoid and other things that will cost £500 + and usually has a 70-80% chance of fixing it. Otherwise i will need a new gear box. As you may have guessed i know nothing about gear boxes and solenoid's so am glad to read that this is a common problem and hear how people are deqling with it but really cross that this is happening to me and so many others - I feel powerless and wish I had known this before I bought this car in 2009 when it was three years old. I shall show then all this tomorrow when I take the car in and like others drive it till it stops. Can you get the automatic gear box replaced with a manual one? Why didn't Evans Halshaw tell me that Peugeot 206 may have this problem - they must have known,

I have a 206 CC model of 2004 with 85,000 miles of no problems and now I get the same issue with the gear going into safe mode whenever I start the engine from cold and drive to a slope. Switching the engine off and on solves the problem. Also if I keep in manually the 2nd gear the problem doesn't appear. Been to the mechanics and he said I need to replace the whole gear. That would cost me more than selling the car, so it's not a solution. Will ask him to just update the software and reset the learning ECU and keep you posted.

I have been experiencing this problem where the ce goes into limp home everytime I drive it. Diagnostics showed "intermittent fault, pressure regulation." I have a 2003 1.6xsi 206.. Replaced valve body and change oil (original Esso). Now the car is back to normal and I haven't got the "Auto Gear Fault" message since. Been about a month after the repair now. Although Peugeot says the oil is lifelong, it should be replaced at around 60,000 KM, depending on operating conditions. Lights flashing usually signals oil wear, and it is advisable to do an oil change when this happens.

Like all of you all on this page i also have a 307 al4 trans and have experienced all of these problems! i have close to 120 miles and have now gotten back auto gear fault since i changed the valves around 60k. The box can be fixed very easy and i am not a professional once u study how the trans work you will see where the fault lies in these boxes! its a pity that Peugeot and other independent garages pretend that they don't know how how to permanently fix this problem!
1. The heat exchanger fitted to the al4 has on early boxes 6 lames or 6 cooling lanes while the new models have 12. This is the source of all the problems for this box as the extreme heat causes the oil to thin out and eventual cause somewhat more friction between the bands and clutches in the box ! when this happens over an extend period of time the metal particles are supposed to get trapped by the filter and then by the valve body filter right? well the truth is the filters don't trap all of the particles and it then inters in to the valve body then into guess what the same pressure control solenoid and toque converter solenoid which then gets stuck, when this happens the coil is either going to be burnt or melted to the point where the computer sends a short circuit signal to the driver as an AUTOMATIC GEAR FAULT, and the code is going to be pressure regulation/ variation or something to that extent. If the box did not go into this mode the bands, pistons and clutches would make sufficient contact in very bad cases u get no reverse gear or no 1st or 2ND.
I could go on and on but this is how to fix it with out spending tons of money!
1.get the diagnostic faults from the trans!
2.if the pressure and converter valves are bad change them .
3.Clean the magnets in the pan and take out valve body and clean! be careful valve body extremely delicate.
4.Replace oil and filter and the small filter in the valve body.
If you experienced any judder while in drive your torque converter may need replacing.
5. Update the engine and trans ecu and do the pedal re-learn
If you have no gear , slips, or engine revs while in drive you need overhaul as pistons, bands and clutches may have been burnt or wared down and are not making a mechanical connection.
If you have time ,the workshop manual, and diagnostic tool which is "lexia 3" and have general tools this can be done by your self with some smart thinking.
When all is well again with gearbox please install an after-market transmission heat exchanger as it will help solve most of the problems and install a transmission temp gauge so that you can monitor the temp ur self .
HOPE this helped some someone! :)
PS ESSO LT71141 is a good oil but if u don't have enough money to buy use Mobil 1 synthetic it is proven to work so don't study the red color over the golden brown its just a marketing gimmick!

I also have a Peugeot 406 automatic and (need I say) it also has started flashing sport and snow lights, displaying alarmist messages about the gearbox and has spent happy days being analysed by Peugeot, the acknowledged experts on its unique computerized system. The only difference I notice with the other cases described is that I seem to get this message when the engine is hot rather than cold (after an hour or so on the motorway) but the remedy is again the same. Turn off the engine and turn it on again. The advice from Peugeot is that there are two options: (1) replace the automatic gearbox, for which I have an official estimate from my local dealer of five thousand five hundred euros for parts and labour (it seems that prices have gone up a bit since people started posting messages about this...) or else (2) buy a new car - though why this should still be an automatic from Peugeot has yet to be explained to me. Option (3) seems to be: drive it around anyway, as long as it moves, then buy something else, since nobody seems able to fix the problem, least of all the manufacturer! If you need an automatic, keep away from Peugeot seems to be the conclusion.

Just happened to me! 406 2002 .... kept dropping into safe mode and eventually took to local main dealer... they cleared the fault codes and said they had checked the gearbox oil and found it to be black with some metal bits in.... this means the box is disintegrating and will need replacement.... I am going for a second opinion. It is really hard to trust anyone over this sort of problem….

Hello everyone. I had the same problem with the gear box. Eventually sorted, with no cost at all. If there are no any clicks or any knocks or any other unusual noises, no oil leaks in the gearbox, it could be only electronic fault. In my case, it was the connector under the air filter box. When I opened it allot of water came out, so I dried it properly and no problems ever since!

Hi guys, I understand all the problems you all mentioned. I have a 307 SW which experienced all teh problems you mentioned. the Transmission in these cars sarry two solenoids which has to be changed ever so often. I am from Trinidad and the cost is 565TTD whic is just about 9us for one. you change the two solenoids and your problems are fixed. these solenoids regulate the oil pressure in the transmission which in turn changes the gears.

I had a similar problem just today after the car was stuck in roadworks and traffic. Gears wouldn't change and the engine just revved up and the gear change clunked in. I also had a sport mode light flashing and like you, the only way I could cancel it was to turn the ignition off.
A few years back when my exec estate was still under guarantee, it was taken into a main dealers with a known problem to Peugeot and was informed that a hot water pipe was too close to an oil pipe and led to the oil overheating which caused the gear malfunctions. I've have had most things that go wrong on this type of car as I have had it since 2002 from new and have clocked up 119k miles.
If I get a solution, I will let you know, that is if you still have the car. I like mine and will keep it till it falls apart.

Hi, bit of an update. I have an OLD 1998, 2.0L 406 estate. The snow and sports lights flash and the box drops into 'safe mode' 5 minutes into a morning journey. I am able to clear this when the engine warms up after a mile or so. Having eventually found a Peugeot 406 workshop manual that mentions the AL4 gearbox, I have found that it has an 'Oil Wear Counter' that counts down to zero after "6000 hours of operation at an oil temp below 95degrees C." After this it flashes the lights and go into 'Safe-Mode' I have replaced the gearbox oil (very easy job) The oil (ESSO LT 71141) cost £33.89 from Peugeot. The hard part now is to get the 'Oil Wear Counter' re-set to zero. I have tried a few independents who couldn't get into the gearbox ECU so I think I will have to ask Peugeot to do it and pay the price (should only be a 15 min job) I will let you all know how I get on and if it solves the problem.

The same thing happened to me twice on my 307 (2003 model, third owner). I had a diagnostics check the first time and of course they want the usual large payment to "fix" it. From what I can see here, turning the engine off and on is the best answer to cure this 'anomaly".

I guess any potential user of Peugeot reading through these frustrations will sure rethink their options. My 406 is 2002 model, has repeatedly been in/out of dealer for the automatic gearbox fault with no distinct diagnosis. Have always had reservations on expertise of the local dealer but now seem to lose psyche of trying beyond after going through the threads of experiences.
I just got a proposal from a mechanic to do complete gearbox overhaul. Not so cheap, and worst if it won't fix the problem. Has anyone had an overhaul, and what were the results?

I have a 206. I get the same alternate lights flashing and car goes into failsafe mode. Also I have to be very gentle on the gas when pulling away otherwise it does not take 2nd well and the engine revs. all other gear changes are fine. Took it to a transmission specialist who did a diagnostic check on it and got a fault code "Pressure Control". "Bad news" he said, "new gearbox needed £1200". He did not mention changing oil or solenoids or anything. Should I get a 2nd opinion or is he right? Car is only worth about £1000 and not worth spending £1200 on this repair! Surely an otherwise perfectly fine car cannot be trashed becuase of this!

I have an OLD 1998, 2.0L 406 estate. The snow and sports lights flash and the box drops into 'safe mode' This doesn't happen on every journey but is very frustrating... Not sure who to trust with sorting this out - In my experience, main dealers always go for the most expensive fix they can get away with.!!! Will they REALLY update the software and clear the auto-box adaptive memory.? Will they JUST do a gearbox oil change and not find a bunch of other thing that 'have' to be done.? I need to do something soon but can't afford to spend too much more on this car. I'll let you know how I get on. Anyone else solved this problem on an older 406.?

It seems to be bad gearboxes on Peugots. Was told they last 50,000 miles. The previous owner had the same problem and I read it had a new gearbox so I obviously thought mine would be alright.

Still no problems here so the solution appears to be the following.
Take the car to a main dealers ask them to run a diagnostic on the computer. This will throw up an error code if the solenoid in the gearbox needs replacing (£400ish) If you are lucky enough that the fault code doesn't show up then get the dealer to put the most upto date software on your computer, clear all fault codes AND reset the adaptive gearbox learning.
This is what I did and it cost me £60 all in and the gearbox message has stopped :o)

BUT.... In my case at least there were NO fault codes logged on the computer at all and the Dealers had already said that they were aware of the solenoid problem and that is what they were looking for but found nothing at all. They reset the computer and the adaptive gear learning and hoped that that would cure the problem. It has been 6 weeks now and have only had the error message appear once in this time just after the reset and nothing since. Fingers crossed this has been the cure

Hello all,
A known problem on the Peugeot autoboxes when starting from cold is a stuck or defective pressure control solenoid. A series of solenoids are fitted in the box which control the oil pressure applied to the gear paddles/plates and hence gear you are driving in.
The solenoids receive commands from the gearbox ECU in response to speed sensors on the grear box shafts, and are known as the input (TSS) and output (VSS) speed sensors. The ECU determines the gear by monitoring these speeds.
Specific error codes should be generated, that point to these solenoids being the issue. Other codes will indicate ECU issues etc.
Replacement is not tricky, but does need the sump cover removing after the oil is drained to reach the solenoids. All in all, it takes about 1-2 hours and is best done by a gearbox specialist. Prices will range from £200 - £400

I hope someone can come up with an answer. I have a 2002 and the dealer says the computer is Kaput. I just dont see how as thing is my wifes car and drives to and from school. Have the same problem on my 307. Always happens when engine/gearbox cold, i.e at start of journey and going up a slight incline at point when gears change 2nd to 3rd. Switching off corrects and it doesn't happen again - until next time. If I drive very gently i.e don't press to hard the fault does't occur. My son has just bougt the same car - 05 model and has the same fault. Does anyone know if other cars using this Porche gearbox have the same poblem or is it just Peugeot?

Interestingly enough we have the same car and similar problem as without warning and with increasing regularity the car flashes up the transmission fault and swaps between snow and sport modes.
After asking loads of people its booked into the Peugeot dealers next week and we are hoping the problem will not be too expensive to correct. Love the car which has given around 90,000 trouble free, comfortable miles. Will let you know the outcome!

The turning off and on the ignition apparently resets the sensor that monitors the gearbox oil/distance travelled so Im told. I had a good helpful chat with the main dealer this morning and have booked in for a diagnostic check on friday. The plan is to see what the readout says then poss change the oil or replace the gearbox valves apparently. As you can guess im a layman !! Thanks again for your input it is appreciated.

dificult to see how u turning of key can majically fix gbox internal faults.auto boxs work very much like multiplate motorbike clutches, when plates or bands wear then they are done.fluid should be a nice dark cherry red with no burnt smell.if this is so then box ancillarys or computer is faulty.would not hurt to change fluid /filter and check band adjustment.think its a case for pergeot diagnostic readout.
