First , if you are not electrically quilified, DO NOT TOUCH. If you had a burning smell from the compressor , i would look at the relay / capacitor on compressor electrical box. MAKE SURE POWER IS OFF!!Worst case , compressor has caused fault, either way call a good air con company, if it is a cheap and cheerfull unit, bury it, DEEP!! A good air con company call out would be around 40 pounds it should only take 15 min to diagnose.
ohhh lynnn hate to tell you .... but you need a service guy now! either the contactors burned out. (cheap) or you burned the compressor up. if it's that you are in for sticker shock. might have to get a whole new system ..... contact a heating/a/c company and get a service guy out to determine what burned up hopefully it's only the contactors. sorry to tell you the bad news
