I know, old topic but someone might find it helpful.
My brand new dishwasher had E1 after cycle and before draining.
The drain outlet under sink (also brand new) had stop-plugs. Dishwasher couldn't drain so flagged error. Removed plug and all works fine.

Flow meter in the air break system is the issue its not sending the correct information to the PCB. The little turbine spins and the flow meter indicates how much water is entering the tank. This is defective.

In my case this error was caused by a piece of broken glass wedged in the impeller of the drain pump. Removing and inspecting the drain pump is a relatively easy task. You just need to unclip the cover on the underside of the dishwasher. No need to remove any side covers. This will allow you to gain access to the pump. My pump unclipped from its housing by holding in a locking clip and twisting to release. Once I did this a small piece of glass fell out. Simply replaced the pump and refitted the bottom cover. Turned back on and all was fine.

Same Problem, removed bottom panel, WARNING : very sharp edges, cut my finger! Twice! removed two screws holding motor on drain assembly HINT when putting back screw, put it in position on motor unit first for the back screw which is awkward to do up. Something like crockery dropped out, checked for more debris and then put back. All OK so far..

I was getting error E1 part way through any cycle. Replaced the flow meter (behind left hand side panel) but fault was still present.
Found a little chip of crockery blocking the drain pump non return valve. Drain pump is accessed behind the bottom panel. Had to remove a side panel too for access to unscrew the pump from its casing. Rotate pump anti-clockwise to release. Non return valve can be pulled out of the pump casing when waste hose is removed. Waste pipe flushed through, lots of debris as it hadn't been pumping properly.
I suspect it wasn't draining sufficiently to allow it to refill, hence the filling fault code E1. A bit counter intuitive having a fault on the drain system causing a filling fault but it's all working now!

My dishwasher kept showing error code e1 - not filling and not draining.
Manual said problem with incoming water or flow meter (flatish plastic thing with 3 pipes and cable connection behind left side cover)...
I checked inlet filter, had good mains water pressure, replaced flow meter with new. Still didn’t work.
These small dishwashers only have e1 and e4 error codes - so thought it may be a problem with drain pump etc...
Tilted on to its back, removed base cover, removed terminal plugs on drain pump measured resistance of about 200Ohms – all ok… unscrewed and removed pump housing…
Found a large chip of crockery wedged in the impeller!
Reassembled and all works perfectly.
Hope this helps some of you!

Error code E4......I have the definitive answer.
All the recommendations to tilt the machine are totally wrong!!!!! It may work in the short term but is a bodge-fix and covers up the "real" problem - you have a water leak- its as plain as that.
There is nothing wrong with the Kenwood and it has a 'Flood Sensor' that is filling with your leaked water.
I too was suckered into this quick fix but it didnt work for me; then I spoke to a neighbour who is also a dishwaher repair man.
We removed the machine , removed both side-panels (yes its easy for a DIY), dried out the water from the bottom pan (the sensor sits in a small recess right in the middle of the bottom pan). The machine was switched on and we checked for a leak; now there are many pipes and you need to observe just where the leak is. In my case the water was pouring from a broken pipe, but worse still it was leaking right onto the mains electricity !!!!!!!
So DONT mess with bodge fixes - they may kill you!!!

Error Code 1 - I had this problem with a brand new machine and it means no water is getting through.
I tried many things even checking that my plumbing was correct by removing the inlet pipe and switching the water on. Yeah water all over the kitchen tells me theres water, hihihi
I then decided to check that water was passing through the pipe to enter the machine...........NOTHING!!! I then connected the pipe up in reverse WATER. There was an inherent fault with the pipe. The inner was split and acting like a oneway valve. A quick visit to the supplier, shoved the pipe where it fits and received a new one....fault gone

Just had a visit from a kenwoood engineer. He wasn't that interested. We did notice that our door lock wasn't unlocking or releasing properly and have a new one on order. He said that E1 was a water problem but all our pipes are ok. I am going to try the same fix as the E4 code and see how it goes. I will also let you know if the door lock was a problem with it.
1. Bail out all the water from the inside
2. Remove the filter and 2 x mesh pieces.
3. Continue to bail out the water from the filter well.
4. You will probably find pieces of food or fat/debris in the bottom of the well. Remove these.
5. Tilt back the dishwasher at 45 degrees for 30 mins or so to drain and dry the flood sensor.
6. Boil a kettle and pour it down the well. Immediately put the dish washer on a eco wash (no tablets or anything) with half load (ie half water) and this will ease the water pump.
7. Let the dishwasher run its cycle.
8. Clean the filter again and the filter well.
Usual is that they are happy to take your money and not support it properly. I always say you can test the integrity of a company by its after sales support.
I will post in a week or so once we get our replacement part.

apparently its something to do with the inlet valve being open for too long. I've been told to check if there is a blockage (yeah right thats their job!) and then if not book an engineer. Seems to be quite a common problem as I've been looking for a solution to this online and seen a few people also looking.
