aiwa NSX-MT960 tape deck door jam fix?

I put a (Chrome) tape cassette into deck 2 and it moved the tape for a seconds then would not play. The door won't open.

Deck 1 won't work either now, but I can insert and remove tapes and work the deck 1 door. The display shows Tpe 2 0000. The CD player and tuner are fine. When I power off and back on, I hear 6 short tugging/click sounds in the tape deck. I can see the lights respond when I press the remote buttons for FF and RW. The tape will not play. Pressing pause or play several times does not help. While I had a CD in the unit. I pressed the Rec/Rec Mute button and the CD drawer opened (that seems strange?).

I called aiwa (i.e. Sony) and they had me unplug the unit for a minute (I waited 7 minutes) but that had no effect. I called again and they had me power off and then hold the Clear button and then additionally press and hold the power button, but that had no effect on the door (just lost my FM station button settings and had to leave demo mode). I tried inserting a thin paper box strip to hit the latches, but had no luck doing that.

The aiwa repair facility is about 125 miles away and I don't want to mail this unit that has features that I really like. I don't care about the tape in the drive, but I don't want to damage the drive. Short of putting the unit on an ESD table and taking it apart, is there anything else to try? Looking at other door jam questions did not help.

Aiwa/sony should add a hard-to-locate-and-press button to override the door latches, since that seems to be a frequent problem.
Thanks,
Jerry

Great information, tsgunnell! It got me thinking. You see, I just picked up a nice, gently used Aiwa CX-NAJ20 tonight from Craigslist and had the same problem Jerry had (which is what these folks had, too http://www.howtomendit.com/answers.php?id=32101).

I took the side panels off (easy enough) and the belts were intact but when I applied some rubber rejuvenator (I got it at a local VCR repair shop years ago - don't know if such exist today) to the inside of the belts with a cotton swab as I turned the belt pulley and all of a sudden, the doors functioned properly, the tapes didn't get stuck, and no more clicking.

So with the unit on, I ran a tape fast forward while holding the soaked swab along the inside of the belt then the outside and then did the same to the other deck's belt.

I just Googled the rejuvenator, "PRB Rubber Cleaner Revitalizer" and found it here for $6.

I don't know how long it'll last but replacing the belts looks a wee bit complicated. At any rate, thanks for your help.

Best regards,

Paul

the door probally will not open because the heads are in the play position the bellts are probably slack and not turning the deck into the off position look at the back of the decks and whilst pressing the tape off button give the capstan a push with your finger if the deck unlocks then the belts need to be replaced
