Hi, just had a similar problem develop on my clio and have decided to renew the pump. Seems like a drastic step, but once something like a high pressure injection pump starts going it's going to be down hill all the way.
I got a pump from a breakers yard for a tenner, and the removal so far hasn't been easy - but it is worth it.
Firstly you need to remove the cam belt covers, with the car in gear so the engine is locked in place meticulously mark the cam belt position in relation to the cam and fuel pump sproket. This is very important and will save you a lot of grief later on.
Disconnect all the hose unions, accelerator cable, fast idle cable and electrical connections and move to one side.
Unfasten the two star drive bolts at the right hand end of the pump (looking from the bonnet). Unfasten the three retaining bolts at the left hand of the engine - the bottom one is difficult to get to, but with a universal joint onto a 5-6" extension bar going into a ratchet, it fits.
With that off, the technical bit come's in - it's a 15mm that retain's the pump sproket, so get rid of that, then, with a small set of three jaw gear pullers remove the sproket (failing this a big hammer on the end of the shaft will help).
The fuel pump should now be free, now the trick is that as the pump shaft is keyed, and with all the sprokets marked you can put the new pump on and bolt it up, then rotate it with the belt off (may have forgotten to mention that you'll need to undo the tensioner) to the point at which all the marks line up, slip the belt on, tension it up (an assistant levering it torte works fine) and voila. refitting is reverse of removal.
Hope that helps.
