Simon, Just done one of these engines, I can confirm that it can only be done accurately with the correct tools. I try to improvise where I can, but DONT with this engine, it will bite you in the wallet very hard as it will be so easy to get wrong. Also well worth getting the complete cam belt kit with tensioners and the rear cam caps, not to forget you should replace the crank pully bolt as its a streatch type!
Worth a try Chris, but I'm not sure your engine would necessarily be a write off. The belt has just gone on my 1.9 R registered estate. It'll cost me as much as the cars worth. Head skimming, new set of valves etc. BUT it's only done 50K and would be good for the same again.
Been a fantastic motor and who wants to spend 30K on a motor that's going to get beaten up on the streets of this city?
just comtemplating the same myself. Mine is a S reg 1998 1.6 16valve laguna. been quoted between £220 and £400 so far at the garages. Some special tools are needed which puts me off. I think there is a kit available to do the job but it costs about £60 to buy from new. Garage mechanic says it takes 2.5 hours with the correct tools. Cam belt should be available at about £25. So I guess it can be done by a home mechanic in a day for less than £90. Let me know if you know any better! One thing I do know is that that engine is a write off if the belt goes!
