Loss of engine power?I have recently purchased a motorhome based on a Peugeot Boxer chassis. It was first registered in 1996 so I would assume it is a Boxer 1. After having a full service carried out by my mechanic, my wife and I decided on a week away on a site we know quite well. It is a 240 mile journey which I figured would be a good test for our first trip away.
On level ground the van runs sweetly enough but when tackling any gradient loses power significantly, quite perturbing when the wagon you are overtaking suddenly starts undertaking because I have slowed down quite a lot, from approx 60mph down to about 40 mph.
Can anybody suggest reasons for this?? What sort of thing should I be looking into ??
BTW, it's a 4 cylinder petrol engine, 1995cc, and has covered 56000 miles.
Any and all help gratefully received on this problem. Thanks.

Thanks to all for their input, especially Charlie for taking the time to search the net and type the results out; all very time consuming. With that said, I have all MOT's and quite a bit of service history in the form of the service book and additional receipts for work done. The mileage does seem to be genuine.
I have been in touch with my mechanic and I'm taking it down to him later today, as after I filled up with fuel yesterday the engine started to misfire a little. I had to get the wife to her doctors appointment then get back home (a round trip of about 6 miles) and when I pulled up in the drive you could smell the exhaust was really hot. Checked this morning to see that all plug leads were secure and haven't got one waving in the breeze and found water in two of the spark plug wells. It isn't coolant fluid and it isn't oil, but it tcan't be good !!! LOL !!!
Will see what the mechanic says later.

could be partially blocked exhaust-if original silencer[being 13 years old] internals may have corroded and disloged, also is vehicle getting full throttle [if cable],may be foreign matter in tank slightly blocking outlet pipe when on full throttle demand. brakes may be binding -again with being low mileage.

Hi if your looking it's Charlie again pulled something off net for you you can check out fully on oft.gov.uk or the site in the info below here's and extract.
of course you haven't much chance if private sale you have to have proof if it's been clocked.
Ask the dealer the right questions such as
- What mechanical history and mileage checks have they done on the car you want to buy?
- How many former owners has the car had and is the full service history available?
- Has the car been modified from its original specification?
Ask for important information and answers to your questions to be put in writing before you buy so you have proof of claims - don't just rely on verbal claims or promises by the seller.
Find out about the dealer's customer complaint procedures and whether they are signed up to a code of practice - if a problem does arise after the sale you need to know who to contact.
Remember that if you buy a car from a private seller or an auction, you may pay less but you will have fewer legal rights than when buying from a dealer.
For further information about consumer rights when buying a second-hand car visit www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/cars.

I suspect Peccavi is right.
You can carry out a test start engine put it in 2gear leave hand brake on gently raise clutch pedal if the engine slightly hesitates but doesn't stall and you get a acrid smell then the clutch is going as Pecavvi suggests.Depress clutch pedal switch off engine. If it does stall take vehicle to garage and get a compression test on the cylinders. Also check all back MOT's as I would with such low mileage. If only current MOT check it the mileage is on it and then check [costs] with DVLA if they have previous mileage readings for that vehicle.
I would also go back to the seller once you know what the problems is ask for the repair costs or at least half...... If it's 'sod off' see a solictor some do half hour free consultations ask about small claims court procedure.

I have had two vehicles in which the clutch failed - in each of them the problem was first noticed on hills - the steeper the hill the worse it was.
I am not a motor expert - others may know differently.
