Keep losing RED 'tube'(?) Green picture on Toshiba 28W8DBA TV?Would be extremely grateful. Disabled mum here. Have had this TV for OVER six years, bought for us as a gift by mother in law after her 'bingo' win! Two young kids (telly addicts in the Winter.....lots of fresh air and a BIT of telly in the summer) almost CRIPPLED by lack of 'RED' in kids tv! COULD the recent heatwave in London...32 degrees Centigrade (Celsius for the fusspots, sorry don't know the Farenheit?!) have overheated TV and blown the RED TUBE? Do TVs still HAVE tubes? What is a CRT? Is it a colur replacement tube or am I making you all laugh hysterically? RE: 'related' question' can't really help MUCH, EXCEPT to say that the Toshiba 28W8DBA has a 'self diagnosing fault light'. Each flashing pattern means something. Trouble is, after this many years, can't find the manual, or find one ONLINE manual that I don't have to pay a FORTUNE for....beastly companies....haven't they heard of pdf?!!!
PLEASE, some CLEVER sparky help out a damsel in distress!!! Many thanks.

Sorry to suggest this but the television in question uses a Philips tube/crt that is well known to be causing these symptoms. It was a bad batch of tubes supplied.
If the above is confirmed.
I have a spare new tube with a small chip in the glass that you could have free of charge although you you would have to arrange the collection from Scotland and then of course have it fitted by an engineer if you wish although due to costs in transportation and installation it may not be worth it as 28" sets are quite cheap now.

yeah agree with last reply! could be easy repaired! but like to add that if you are happy with the price the engineer gives you then go ahead but if not i always say get 3 quotes & tell them all its not your first quote that makes them think before over charging you! or saying its something else when its not due to that they dont know what the engineer said to you before hand oh & keep all quotes to yourself untill they have quoted you the price then tell them if they cheaper or not lol

TV faults in my experience do increase during summer and winter months when there are extremes of temperature during summer and maybe because they are used more often in winter.
Regarding your fault, carefully check:
Are there patchy or incorrect colours around the edge of the picture?
Or is it only lacking red over the entire picture area?
Failure of the thermistor (minor component) is common and would cause patchy colour. It is also a fault symptom which occurs suddenly, is iexpensive, and easily fixed by an engineer.
Failure of the tube is usually (although not always) a slow decline of one of the three colours, which gets more noticable especially at switch on, ie. a weak colour may improve as the tube heaters warm up. 'Usually', crts (cathode ray tubes) are fairly reliable to about 10 years and then decline more noticably after that. So if the colour looks particularly bad at switch on, then the crt could be suspected.
There are many other components in the colour circuit which can cause lack of red and very often they are simply repaired by an engineer.
There are no diagnostic lights to indicate the cause of the loss of red.
