email attachments?

After reading one of the other questions, I too have a problem with email attachments. When I get one the follwing message appears when I try to open it
" THIS FILE DOES NOT HAVE A PROGRAM ASSOCIATED WITH IT FOR PERFORMING THI ACTION.CREATE AN ASSOCIATION IN THE FOLDER OPTION CONTROL PANEL"
Does anybody know what this means and how to get around it. If you can help I would be grateful if you could explain it in easy to understand terms, Being an O.A.P. with no computer knowledge or experience I find it difficult to uderstand computer talk.
Thanks very much for any help/info.

Like Bob said - much more elegantly than me...

There are different types of file - each having its own specific language - A file name is often followed by a dot and an extension as in a letter you might create using Microsoft Word - Begging_letter.doc or a Spreadsheet from Microsoft Excel What_I _owe.xls

Excel likes to work with .xls files and Word with .doc files (among others)

The extension after the file name indicates the type of file and the type of file indicates which application programme can handle (open) the attachment.

Other file types you may encounter are PDF (portable document format - Acrobat Reader) JPEG - a picture viewer application - there are thousands of different file extensions - a programme that runs in the machine will have an extension of .exe for executable .txt stands for plain text and .htm or html a file that a browser like Internet Explorer can handle and display.

If you get an attachment in an email you should usually be able to see the file extension - Save the file and open it with an application that recognises that extension - if in doubt do a search to find out what the extension means.

to make progress as suggested go to control panel - click on the Folders tab at the top - Click on Tools and select Folder Options - Click on File Types - see a list of the file types registered on your machine.

You probably do not have the correct software to open the attachment. Look at the type of file that has been sent to you (look at the extension)..for example.
pictures will have a .jpg extension
spreadsheets a .xls
documents files will have a .doc
and .pdf for a converted doc or picture
Look here
http://www.fileinfo.com/common.php
This will tell you what program you need to open it. Also remember that there are a lot of free programs that will open the files you need so don't go buying any expensive software until you have googled the free ones
