My daughter has an advent 7081 which does not switch on.?I have checked the charger which seems to be fine giving me 19v D.C. When the charger is plugged into the laptop the cresent moon light blinks once then no sign of life. Pressing the on button does nothing. My first thoughts was that the battery is goosed but im not sure how to test it as there are 6 terminals.

I know this is an old message, but i just thought some details may help for others. This applies to ALL laptops, new, old, etc. any model or make.
Laptops are very weird with this kind of error. At worst, its totally faulty and needs a new main circuit board (or just the smaller/cheaper Power Control Board), but if you are lucky, it's simply a 'sleeping' problem.
It varies on different laptops, but here's a few things that can help....
1) check the charger/PSU - which i see you have done already :)
2) if the light blinks as yours does/did, it may mean your battery is already 'fully charged', so it will not need to do anything more than blink. Once fully charged, some laptops show no lights, some show a solid green light, and some flash a green light - check in the manual to see if it indicates what you should see.
3) Laptops have over complicated SLEEP circuits, to save power. But many drop into the sleep mode, and cannot wake again. Try removing the battery, and charger lead, hold down the power on/off button for 30-60 seconds to drain the final bit of energy from it, and leave it for anythign from an hour to 24 hours (it varies a lot). When turning back on, DO NOT have the battery fitted. Keep the power button down, and then plug the mains charger in, release the power button after 10 seconds, wait 10, then try to turn on as normal. This has woken 3 PACKARD BELL 'dead' laptops for me so far this year.
It is possible for a faulty circuit in a laptop battery to cause no power, slow CPU speed, random crashes, inability to write to CD/DVD (laser needs to much power), and probably a few other symptoms i have not seen yet.
4) It can also be a half-broken power socket, try gently wobbling the charger lead (very gently) and se if the lights flash anywhere - if they do, its not getting a good contact. and the socket (or charger lead) is at fault maybe.
5) always remember - just because charged battery is fitted, and that battery may seem fully charged & happy, it does not guarantee anything. A dead battery may take 4 hours to charge, or it may charge fast and hold charge for 2 minutes - whatever you can imagine, is a possiblity. Charging lights on a laptop do not indicate a working/good battery, they simply indicate the charge circuit is sending power to the battery.
6) Some laptops check the CPU & RAM (memory) instantly on power-up. If you have changed either, even for a working part, change it again to see.
I get many many laptops come to me as broken, and simply need waking up - personally, i think the manufacturers should conecntrate more on working quality & reliability, than trying to squeeze 2 extra minutes of battery life out of the things. Im sure all customers would agree too
:) Good Luck.
