RYOBI FATALLY FLAWED EXPAND-IT PETROL TOOLS!?Following the User Manual Instructions to the letter, using perfectly prepared 50:1 petrol mix, I could not for the love of God get my RYOBI strimmer to start. During this between fingers skin-stripping process, I noticed that the throttle cable was loose whether the handle was pulled or not, this had to be completely wrong as it meant regardless of whether you pulled the handle or not there would be no change to the amount of fuel reaching the carburettor. An engineer then advised me of a slight change to start-up technique and it worked first time!? From this point on I was able to start the machine. I took it to do a job, used it in 15mins bursts, it appeared to be fine if perhaps a tiny bit fast sounding but wasn't producing any smoke or making any unusual noises. I stopped and restarted using only one pull of the cord 3 times, I then had to put more fuel in as. When I pulled the cord in exactly the same way as before, there was a nasty crunch sound and bits of what appear to be the Recoil Mechanism flew out of the engine casing. One piece that escaped was a complete, intact bolt.
Basically RYOBI seems to have a manufacturing quality problem AND a factory supplied SETUP FLAW because there is NO WAY that the choke cable should be loose like it was on my machine. The flywheel metal just shattered. It very clearly isnt made properly. I have seen dozens of people complaining about this component online, unfortunately after I bought this complete crap.
My advice? DO NOT BUY RYOBI PETROL EQUIPMENT. Now I'm stuck with no strimmer and a bunch of accessories that are completely useless without the motor section.

I agree. Avoid these like the plague! I have had one for two months. Bought it, put it together, fuelled it (following mixture instructions to the letter) and it worked like a dream but one month later I come to use it again and it will NOT start. I hav 1) drained it of all fuel, remixed and refuelled 2)bought higher octane fuel and remixed. Again no joy. I managed to get it to start a couple of times when the fuel tank had been emptied. It seems to run for 30 secs or so on remaining fuel vapours. The next worring problem is that when I do coax it to life this way the clutch immediatly engages and the business end spins without me touching the throttle at all. DANGEROUS! What is the point of a clutch if it doesn't delink the drive? DO NOT BUY! there are plenty of complaints about this all over the net. I cannot beleive that RYOBI are unaware of the problem, where is the product recall? Fact is they are probably not bothered. I have been mugged to the tune of 100 Quid. Ryobi are about to find out that isn't a good idea cue extremly difficult customer!
