I have a John Deere 175 Hydro - it's a hard start, or no start why? This mower runs great once it starts. However, 9 times out of 10 it takes a long time to start or won't start. It has a new battery, a new spark plug, a new fusebox/fuse. Any suggestions as to why it should run great one day and not the next?

I too have a 175 hydro, but I fixed the hard start problem. Deere has a solenoid kit that routes the battery directly to the starter rather than through the key and other indicators on the front panel. The kit includes everything you need. Now, when you turn the key, the current reaches the solenoid (relay switch) that connects the battery directly to the starter. No more voltage drops and the 175 starts easily.

Make sure the gas cap is vented. I had the same problem with one I am fixing for an elderly lady. I also blew out the gas line and filter which is relatively simple and doesn't take that much time. Once you get it started if those don't make a difference, then check the 2 screws on the carb. Also, the fuel needle at the base of the carb gets stuck with carbon buildup-blow it out too then hook it back up. Hope that helps!
