I have a 2.0 SD card that cracked across the middle of the card. The area where the contacts are fine. It still fits in camera but when I turn on camera it stats the card needs to be formatted. If I format will it erase everything on the card ? When I put card in slot on computer nothing happens. I've even tried recovery software It doesn't find anything either. Can data be retrieved from a Cracked SD Card ? or is ALL LOST ?
There are two possibilities: (1) The Flash memory chip in the card is broken. If this is the case, your data is gone and the card is trash. (2) The chip is OK, but is partially separated from the contacts. In this case, there might be a way to get your data off it (see below). Either way, you need a new SD card.
You might be able to read some data off it if you squeeze the card one way or another. The idea here is to bring whatever connections were broken back together. Try squeezing it whichever way makes the crack close more. Preferably try to read it while squeezing it, though this isn't possible with most readers. Alternatively squeeze the crack shut and use Scotch tape to hold it like that while you (try to) read it. (Don't tape over the contacts...)
NOTE: The above is about as likely to further break the card as it is to recover data from it. Either way, don't expect to use the card again. If you can repair it to a semi-working state, only do it to read. DO NOT store data on it again -- it won't work for very long.
