How do I get the housing off a Kenmore vacuum (Model 839) so I can repair t?
I need to take the upper rear housing off a Kenmore vacuum (Model 839) so I can repair or replace the cord take-up mechanism. I can't find a single screw that is holding the housing in place. Does anyone know the trick before I break the plastic, please?!!
I have a kenmore 7100 vacuum and there are no screws to take off the housing (plastic). The upper half of the housing (above the motor) is taken of by prying gently around the seam between the upper and lower half, using a flat slot screw driver. You will find four clips, one on each side and two near the back of the machine, which simply need to be pryed gently away from the machine about one quater of an inch and the upper housing (motor cover) will pop off.
Would help to know what the vaccum looks like, but I assume it's a canister type. For my Model 116, there are two large screws that are visible with the bag cover completely open (as you would to change the bag). The other two screws are under the large paddle that is used to re-wind the cord. I had to firmly pull up on the paddle to get it off to expose the second set screws... easy does it! Good luck.
