I have a Vaillant VCW-GB 242 EH Boiler which is leaking.?My boiler is leaking and not maintaining the pressure on the sealed system guage. I have had someone to look at it and he says it is the heat exchanger and is difficult and expensive to replace, however I am sceptical as he did not strip the boiler down, merely unscrewed the front plate. Is it possible it is just a leaking internal pipe?

If the exchanger has gone then you will all most certainly see the water leaking from underneath the boiler.
If there is no leak on that then possible causes are either, leaky valves on rads or even a pipe.
However much more likely is the expansion vessel & its easy to tell if its that, go and have a look outside to where your preassure relief valve pipe goes to, if there is small amounts of water leaking through that its almost certainly the expansion vessel that leaking, its only a rubber bag in there & does go, mine did exactly the same.
I replaced mine myself & all is fine now but before I would need to top up with water at least once per week, I had to do it once & only then it was just a tiny bit.

Hi, agree completely with above, have the same boiler, have a leak, although I can’t say it is the same source, but the black duralite heat exchanger has gone at the top fitting and was obvious (bottom left after the covers have been removed - apparently a common fault!) this I am replacing with an updated metal KIT (£80) that is relatively easy to fit.

All parts for this boiler are still available.
The hot water heat exchanger is easy to replace - the main heat exchange pipes that sit above the burners are more tricky!
It sounds like it's the main pipe above the burners that have gone. This would be visible if the front plate was removed, after the white cosmetic casing has been removed also. It would take about 10mins to diagnose, and about 10mins to put back together (withouth fixing it!).
