How can I fix my marantz SR7400 AV Surround Receiver? The sound on my marantz SR7400 AV Surround Receiver switches off by itself with a very audible click generally after 2-20+ minutes of usage, and it changes the receiver's LCD display as well.
For example, if I play a music CD the receiver's LCD panel might display "CD ANALOG" and the sound will be fine. Soon after, a loud click from the receiver will be heard, the music simultaneously stops [even though the CD/DVD player (Philips DVP532K) continues to play the CD], and the receiver's display changed to "CD:HP"
Similarly, when I play a movie DVD the following happens: Initially good audio & video, sudden loud click, audio stops but video continues, and the receiver's display changed from "DVD DIG.4" to "DVD:HP".
Has anyone encountered this audio cutoff problem before with marantz? There is no mention of it in their user guide's troubleshooting section, and I have no idea what "HP" means -- probably not headphones because I have none connected.
Note: the sound and video from my system used to work fine together, I haven't made any changes to the system, and the cables seem to be connected properly.
Also, how much better is the sound quality if I buy a separate CD player for my music as opposed to using my DVD player?
Thanks.

Hi the answer given to me ...A short in the speaker lead or the speaker itself.
My actual problem was due to adding an extra speaker in series with an existing speaker.
Removed the extra speaker and back to extreme volume again.

John,
I hope somebody chimes in with an answer because mine is doing almost the same thing. The sound shuts down with that click you mention (sounds like power up/down) and the display says PROTECT. I found the users manual online and searched for PROTECT - as you know, none of the display information is discussed in the manual (!#$#@?)
Can't someone help us????
